Saints’ J.T. Gray on new kickoff format: ‘I feel like that’s going to be a great thing’

The upcoming NFL season brings several rule changes that will significantly impact 2024, starting with the very first play of every game.

The league has adopted a new kickoff format, inspired by the XFL, to reduce the number of touchbacks and bring more action to this play.

New Orleans Saints defensive back and special teamer J.T. Gray recently shared his thoughts on the change with NFL Network’s Steve Wyche on “The Insiders.” Gray noted that the Saints have been adjusting to the new rule since it was approved.

“The new kickoff rule is pretty interesting. We’ve been practicing it since Day 1 of OTAs,” Gray told Wyche. “I feel like it’s changing the value of special teams. It’s going to be great because you’ll get action on every first play of the game. It’s a positive change for the NFL and the fans.”

Gray, an All-Pro and Pro Bowler as a special teamer in 2021, is particularly excited about the kickoff tweaks, as they provide more opportunities for him to showcase his skills. The Saints also have Rashid Shaheed, who earned his first Pro Bowl nod as a returner in 2023, with 25 punt returns for 339 yards and one touchdown, along with 18 kickoff returns for 384 yards in 15 games.

Other players have also expressed positive sentiments about the new kickoff rule. Cowboys special teamer C.J. Goodwin said it will be “fun” with more returns expected. Chiefs safety Justin Reid even plans to get involved by kicking under the new format.

With New Orleans’ training camp set to start for veterans on July 23, Gray and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi will continue to refine their approach. If the new kickoff rule proves successful in 2024, contributors like Gray, Goodwin, and Reid could see it renewed for the 2025 season.
