Luca Orellano: FC Cincinnati’s new star proves seamless fit

Stepping into big shoes can be daunting, especially when tasked with replacing a standout player like Álvaro Barreal, a 2023 MLS All-Star who played a pivotal role alongside Lucho Acosta in FC Cincinnati’s victorious 2023 Supporters’ Shield campaign. When Barreal was loaned to Brazilian side Cruzeiro, the spotlight turned to Orellano, a versatile player eager to embrace new challenges in MLS.

“In our discussions during recruitment, we talked about his willingness to adapt to different roles and positions, and he was completely open to that,” remarked FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan. “Since joining the team, Luca has shown a remarkable openness to learning, listening, and asking questions.”

Orellano’s talent was evident from the start, backed by his background developing at Vélez Sarsfield, renowned for producing top-tier talent alongside clubs like Boca Juniors and River Plate. While transitioning to MLS and life in the United States presented challenges, Orellano praised his teammates for their support in easing his adjustment process.

“It’s not easy to come into a new environment and immediately make an impact, but Luca has seamlessly filled the role of left wingback,” noted Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano. “His attitude and work ethic have been invaluable to our team’s success this season.”

Beyond his adaptability, Orellano adds a creative spark to Cincinnati’s lineup, complementing MVP Acosta. He’s equally comfortable taking on defenders in one-on-one situations or navigating tight spaces against multiple opponents, traits honed from his experience primarily as a winger or occasionally as a No. 10.

Moreover, Orellano has showcased a knack for scoring spectacular goals, exemplified by his recent midfield wonderstrike in a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

“No doubt, that goal was incredible,” Orellano chuckled. “I saw the goalkeeper off his line, remembered Lucho’s advice, and just went for it. Luckily, it found the net.”

Coach Noonan has recognized Orellano’s impact further up the field, aligning game plans to maximize his attacking prowess, much like they do with Acosta.

“We’re starting to build around Luca’s effectiveness in the attack, similar to how we utilize Lucho,” Noonan explained. “His versatility allows us to explore different positions and strategies to win matches.”

For Orellano, the position matters less than contributing to FC Cincinnati’s pursuit of major trophies.

“The ultimate goal is to win championships,” he affirmed. “Whether it’s scoring goals, setting up plays, or defending as a fullback or wingback, I’m here to help the team in any way I can.”

Less than a year into his MLS journey, Orellano’s evolution from a role player to a multifaceted contributor underscores his commitment to FC Cincinnati’s ambitions. As he continues to thrive in his new environment, Orellano remains focused on one thing: pushing Cincinnati closer to MLS Cup glory and defending their Supporters’ Shield title.
