The ECU baseball team dominated Maryland 9-0 in the series opener Friday night:
- Big third inning: ECU struck first for a run in the first inning, but more importantly ECU touched up Maryland starter Hunter Parsons for five runs in the third inning. Bryant Packard led off the inning with a
double, and then advanced to third on Lane Hoover’s sacrifice bunt. Spencer Brickhouse (2-for-3 on the day) was hit by a pitch and Alec Burleson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Packard. A Turner Brown (3-for-4 on the day) single setup Jake Washer to really break the game open with a three-run home run. Brady Lloyd was hit by a pitch and then scored on a Dusty Baker double to wrap up the scoring.
- Follow-up: The Pirates went quiet for most of the way after that big third inning but came back to add on three more runs in the eighth inning. With two outs and nobody on, Packard doubled and stole third. Hoover (2-for-3 on the day) singled to score him and Brickhouse topped it off with a two-run home run.
- Jake Agnos, ace: Agnos pitched great yet again. Agnos’ last start was seven scoreless innings against Marist and this was just as good. Agnos again went seven scoreless innings and struck out seven batters while only giving up six hits. Agnos earned run average this season is now at 2.12. Agnos is now 3-1 on the season. Zach Barnes and Evan Odum each pitched one hitless inning of relief to finish out Agnos’ strong start.
- Double machine: Packard had a monster game for ECU in the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5. Two of Packard’s four hits were doubles down the left field line and the other two hits were both singles to center field.
The Pirates improve to 13-6 with the win and Maryland falls to 10-6. ECU will look for the series win tomorrow when the two teams play at 2 p.m.
