Blues sign D Suter to one-year, $775K contract

The St. Louis Blues signed veteran defenseman Ryan Suter to a one-year contract worth $775,000 on Wednesday night, with the potential for an additional $2.225 million in performance bonuses.

Suter, 39, was bought out of the final season of his four-year, $14.6 million contract with the Dallas Stars on June 27.

The 6-foot-1 left-shot defenseman played all 82 games with the Stars last season, tallying two goals and 17 points. He also contributed a goal and four points in 19 playoff games before the team was eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final.

Originally drafted seventh overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2003 NHL Draft, Suter has accumulated 105 goals and 681 points over 1,444 career games with the Predators, Minnesota Wild, and Stars.

In 2013, Suter finished second in Norris Trophy voting to P.K. Subban and was named a first-team all-star after recording four goals and 32 points in a shortened 48-game season.

Hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, Suter represented the United States twice at the Winter Olympic Games, earning a bronze medal in 2010. He also competed in five World Championships, notching three goals and 14 points in 32 appearances.

Suter also played for Team USA in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto, where the team finished seventh.
