GREENVILLE, N.C. — Brock Young scored 22 points with his first basket putting him over 1,000 for his career as East Carolina cruised to a 91-70 win over Fayetteville State on Saturday.
East Carolina (7-2), who is undefeated in six home games this season, raced out to a 19-4 lead and was never challenged as it won its fifth straight game since losing to Charlotte in the Charleston Classic on Nov. 19.
Five of the Pirates' first nine field goals came from behind the arc as they built a 25-8 lead less than eight minutes into the game after scoring the game's first nine points. Darrius Morrow, who added 11 points, scored the game's first four points.
ECU methodically extended its lead to 26 points late in the first half and held a 47-24 halftime advantage behind 51.6 percent shooting (16-of-31) and forcing 12 Bronco turnovers, which translated into 16 points.
The Pirates held Fayetteville State (3-3) to just 31 percent shooting (11-35) in the first half and 34 percent for the game (24-of-70), while they finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (31-63).
The second half began just as the first half did with the Pirates scoring eight unanswered to build a 31-point less than three minutes out of intermission. East Carolina led by as many as 33 with 3:39. All 12 players who got into the game scored at least two points and 11 players had at least two rebounds.
With a sizeable advantage in the frontcourt, ECU out-rebounded the Broncos by 11 and scored 42 points in the paint. It also used its strength to earn 33 trips to the foul line where ECU connected on 20 attempts.
A total of nine 3-pointers fell for the Pirates tonight, including four from Young. ECU shot 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from behind the arc.
Tyrell Tate scored 14 to lead Fayetteville State with Jarmel Baxter and Sidney Evans adding 10 points each.
